Home Adopt a Dog

Here at Hectors House Crete there are always dogs for adoption. Most of our dogs go to Holland through Mirtos Animal Project, but they can be prepared to travel anywhere as long as the costs are met by the adoptee.

Dogs for adoption are listed in the following categories:

Puppies

Small Dogs

Small to Medium Dogs

Medium Dogs

Large Dogs

Orchid

Back in May a local stray dog had 6 puppies in a field.
A lovely Greek family have been looking after the mum and pups and tried desperately to find homes for them. Unfortunately they could not find homes and since the field is next to a road they have asked if HHC can take them and re-home them. Obviously we have had to help with this as we cannot stand by and watch the puppies get killed on the road.

At the moment we only have 5 of the pups as the last one has proved difficult to catch. The couple are going to keep the mum and we have since had her neutered.
As the puppies were born in a field and are all girls I have given them names of flowers...

Mum is a med/large dog so would assume that the girls will be a similar height.
They were a little frightened when they first arrived but are now really sweet and loving puppies.

If you feel you could adopt Orchid, please contact us.

Maybe you cannot adopt Orchid, but would like to sponsor her until she is adopted.

Frankie

Frankie is a male dog DOB approx 02/12. He is part Cretan Hound and is a med/large dog. Frankie had been on the streets near Agios Nikolaos for some days before he was hit by a car and left for dead.
A local taverna owner called me to say that a dog had been hit by a car and could not walk, so I went to investigate.
When I arrived at the Taverna 'Frankie' was lying near the road with both front legs in makeshift splints (first photo). So off to the vets we went. As you already know both his front legs were badly broken and he had to have surgery to put metal plates in both legs. Thankfully all the costs were covered by donations. I just need a good home for him as he is a very loving dog and just loves people and lots of attention. Unfortunately he will not get all the attention he needs at Hectors House. I am trying to find a foster locally for him but not having much luck.
Frankie is an amazing dog. When he was on the streets he would not go near people, but now he just loves them. He is very gentle, even when he was in pain he did not try to bite he just let you help him. As you can see from the photos, he's a real character.

If you feel you could adopt Frankie, please contact us.

Maybe you cannot adopt Frankie, but would like to sponsor him until he is adopted.

Ed

Back in September when I was on holiday a puppy was thrown over the fence at HHC. Unfortunately the puppy hid under a shed and no one knew he was there until a few days after I returned. When I passed the door of the shed I heard a low growling noise and when I got down on the ground and looked under the shed I saw a very frightened puppy.

The poor thing was so terrified he would not come out from under the shed. At night when no one was around he would come out and pinch the cat food from the cat bowls and this is how he had survived.

Anyway we started to feed him regularly to build him up as he was very, very thin. Eventually he came out from under the shed and we put him in a dog crate inside. At first he would not let you stroke him, but slowly, after some weeks he got used to it.

He has now been moved to an outside pen and put in with another more confident dog which has been a great help to his confidence.

This poor pup must have been so badly treated to be so young and so frightened of people.

Ed is male pup (DOB 06/15). I would estimate that he will be a medium size approx  13 kilos when fully grown.

If you feel you could adopt Ed, please contact us.

Maybe you cannot adopt Ed, but would like to sponsor him until he is adopted.

Newby

I was up at HHC when I heard some barking coming from outside. When I went to investigate I found this lovely little chap just walking around and barking. He must just have been left up there in the middle of nowhere. I looked around but did not see any other pups....I hope there weren't anymore because I hate to think what might have happened to them.

He is a sweet little boy about 3 1/2 months old and will be a medium sized dog when fully grown.

Maybe you cannot adopt Newby, but would like to sponsor him until he is adopted.

Fred

Unfortunately Fred passed away in March 2015 from kidney failure brought on by Leishmania
Fred was a lovely male dog of medium size but stocky build.
I have known this dog since he was a pup, born approx May 2008. He was found down a large drainage whole where he had been thrown and left to die at 3 months old.
A very good Greek friend of mine who had recently lost her dog asked me for a puppy, so Fred became hers. Recently my friend had to move house due to ill health and could no longer look after Fred properly so I said HHC would look after him and find him a new home.
You couldn't wish to meet a nicer dog. He loves people, dogs, cats....just about everything.
When he came to us he was quite thin, not like him, so we had him tested and he was positive for Leishmania. Fred has responded well to his treatment and is back to his normal weight apprx 28 kilos!!!

If you feel you could adopt Fred, please contact us.

Maybe you cannot adopt Fred, but would like to sponsor him until he is adopted.

Eve On Christmas Eve, a friend called about a stray puppy that had been dumped in a quarry outside the village of Kritsa. She was hopeing that we would have space for her, and as luck would have it we did.
Even though we see many dogs in terrible conditions it was still a shock to see this lovely dog in such a state. She was so thin and shaking with the cold......with the saddest eyes....
We have called her Eve.

Eve was born around May 2011 and even though a little bit timid, she is very loving and affectionate. Unfortunately she has tested positive for Leishmania and is currently on treatment.

Sadly, Eve passed away on 31st October 2014.

Oleander Oleander was a female hunting dog approx 10 years old.

Sadly, Oleander passed away on the 11th January 2012.

We found her tied to the gates of HHC. She had probably been left as she was too old to breed and they had no use for her. Oleander had been used as a breeding machine and had many litters. She was a lovely, gentle dog and even though she was quite old when we found her she was still quite healthy.

She will be sadly missed.

Hugo

I was leaving HHC one day and as I turned the corner to go up the hill towards the bridge I stopped suddenly.
In the middle of the track was a sack with some large rocks placed on top. I could see something scampering around nearby. Someone had left a sack with puppies in (3 altogether).
I gathered them up and took them to HHC.

Ebony

Ebony is a lovely female dog born around September 2010. She is a good natured dog and loves playing with other dogs. She is sterilised also. Ebony lived on the streets in Kalo Horio being fed by some people I know until the local Greeks started laying poison down and many cats and dogs were killed. My friends were worried that Ebony would be poisoned too so asked if HHC could take her. As luck would have it we had a space so we agreed to take her.

If you feel you could adopt Ebony, please contact us.
